Flipchick: Strategy and Deckbuilding in the Sewers
Flipchick is a turn-based grid combat roguelike where players guide a small bird through sewer battles using a custom deck of action coins. Released by developers filgreen3 and pe4Q07 as a submission for the Brackeys Game Jam 2026.1, the game challenges you to survive a six-day gauntlet that ends with a tough final boss fight.
Positioning on the grid dictates almost everything here. You get to pick two coins from your available pool during a standard turn. These tokens determine exactly what the chick can do—attack, move, defend, push an enemy, or swap places. Make a wrong step and you’re taking a hit. Brutal.
Once your turn ends, the enemies execute their own tactical moves. Because different enemy types use completely different attack patterns, reading the board before committing to an action is mandatory.
Here’s where it gets interesting. The game features a literal window-shaking mechanic. If the coins on screen aren’t giving you the actions you need, you can physically grab the application window with your mouse and shake it to shuffle your options. It’s a creative way to break the fourth wall and bail yourself out of bad luck. In fact, without doing this, getting past the early enemies feels incredibly punishing.
Between fights, players manage their deck and health. You pick new coins to add to your rotation. On top of that, you acquire specific perks. Modifiers like First Strike, Backstab, and Knockback change how your regular coins operate. Suddenly a basic attack can shove a threat across the room or deal massive damage from behind.
The difficulty ramps up daily. Days one through five introduce tougher enemy variants. By day six, you face the final boss. You need a solid grasp of both grid awareness and deck synergy to clear this run. And right now, holding onto a solid defense coin is a very strong strategy for staying alive.
