Dusttale
Dusttale is a free, unofficial Undertale fangame created by Evan Streblow and released on August 2018. It’s an original take on the popular Undertale AU “Dusttale” by Ask-Dusttale, one of the darker alternate-universe concepts in the Undertale fandom. The game is set during a 328th Genocide Route run, where Sans has suddenly remembered all of the player’s previous routes and decides to carry out his own Genocide Route to counter them — killing monsters himself to gain enough power (LOVE) to finally stop the player for good. It’s a grim inversion of the beloved skeleton’s character, and the game leans into that horror-tinged tone throughout.
Mechanically, it plays much like the original Undertale, featuring a fully functioning battle and overworld system, new attack patterns for every monster, a more efficient inventory system, and an estimated playtime of 2–3 hours. It also adds some difficulty customization: a “Health-Regeneration” option on the continue screen for players who want an easier time, and a “Challenge Mode” for those who want the game much harder. The soundtrack mixes remixed Undertale music with fan tracks — notably “Reality Check Through The Skull” by DM DOKURO and “The Murder” by kartrina 130.
The game ended up being pretty influential in the fandom. As one of the first major Dusttale fangames, it helped raise awareness of the original AU and inspired a wave of derivative content — comics, animations, remixes, and even other fangames (like Dusttale: Last Genocide, which Streblow himself congratulated). Its reception is somewhat divided, though: it’s praised for its flashy battle effects and visual creativity, especially the Sans fight, but criticized for spiky difficulty and a story told so sparsely that much of it is left to player interpretation. Still, for fans of brutal Undertale boss fights, it remains a well-known classic of the fangame scene.
