“INSANE” is a fan song by brothers Gabriel “Black Gryph0n” Brown and Nathanael “Baasik” Brown, written from the perspective of Alastor, the radio-host demon from Hazbin Hotel. Check out their youtube channel for more amazing music video. The track first dropped on June 11, 2021, and the brothers reportedly wrote and produced the whole thing in about eight hours. The animated music video at this link is a newer release—it went up to mark the song’s five-year anniversary.
What makes the song unusual is that the guy singing it isn’t a random fan. Black Gryph0n actually provided Alastor’s singing voice in the Hazbin Hotel pilot, and he wrote “INSANE” with permission from series creator Vivienne Medrano. So this is a fan work made by someone who genuinely worked on the show. The lyrics follow Alastor arriving in Hell after his death and leaning hard into his new powers—gleeful, menacing, and not the least bit sorry about it.
The anniversary video was directed by Gabe alongside an animator credited as Luximus, with a sizable independent crew handling rough animation, cleanup, backgrounds, and compositing. It’s a fan animation—non-canon, and not officially affiliated with the show’s studio. That’s worth knowing if you assume it’s an official Hazbin release. It isn’t.
The song’s reach is the wild part. It became a sleeper hit, picked up serious traction once Hazbin Hotel premiered in 2024, and even crossed into mainstream territory—it’s certified Platinum, charted on Billboard’s dance/electronic lists, and got a Fortnite emote called “Reaper’s Showtime” that plays the track. Not bad for a song knocked out in a single afternoon.
