Therapy with Dr. Albert Krueger
Therapy with Dr. Albert Krueger: Psychological Horror Visual Novel With Multiple Endings
Therapy with Dr. Albert Krueger is a free psychological horror visual novel that disguises itself as a cheerful infomercial before turning into something far stranger. Players sign up for a fictional “Dream Therapy” program run by the charismatic Dr. Krueger, only to discover that the treatment hides secrets the brochure left out.
The game was built for the Spooktober 2nd Annual Visual Novel Jam and released in 2020 by indie developer dino999z. It runs on Ren’Py, the same engine behind a lot of well-loved indie visual novels.
The Premise
Feeling drained at work? Mood all over the place? Losing your nerve when you want to speak up? That’s the pitch Dr. Krueger uses to reel new patients in. He markets his sessions like a late-night TV ad — glowing testimonials, five-star reviews, a shiny medical card for every new member. One review buried at the bottom calls him a psychopath. It’s crossed out.
The hook is the contrast. Bright pixel art and an overly enthusiastic narrator sell you on something that gets darker the longer you sit in the chair.
Gameplay and Mini-Games
Sessions blend dialogue choices with short interactive segments. Players answer math questions, play a cups-and-ball guessing game, and flip cards in a memory minigame. Each choice quietly pushes you toward one of three endings.
The catch — you can’t just pick the obvious answers. Getting the “good” ending means answering everything correctly, winning every cup game, and resisting the urge to flip the cards. The worst ending leans the other way. Players who want every conclusion will need to replay the roughly half-hour game a few times.
Art Style and Sound
The visuals lean into 2D pixel art with a punchy, almost cartoonish color palette. It’s surreal — friendly on the surface, off the moment something cracks. Music comes from Harmless, and the ad-style narration is voiced by Michael Brazeau, which sells the fake-commercial framing better than the script alone could.
Content Warnings
This isn’t a soft horror experience. The game contains jumpscares, loud noises, flashing imagery, implied violence, and cartoon gore. Players sensitive to any of these should think twice before downloading.
Languages and Accessibility
Localization is unusually broad for an indie jam game. It’s playable in English, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, and Chinese. Subtitles and a high-contrast option are also built in.
Why It Stands Out
Most horror visual novels open with dread. This one opens with a sales pitch — and that misdirection is the whole point. The fake infomercial wrapper does more heavy lifting than you’d expect, and the moment the tone shifts is what people remember. Short, weird, and easy to recommend to anyone who likes psychological horror with a sense of humor.
