Sonic.EXE – The Original Game is a 2D horror platformer that twists Sega’s classic hedgehog formula into a psychological nightmare. The game pairs simple side-scrolling mechanics with corrupted visuals, distorted audio, and chase sequences that flip the usual Sonic dynamic on its head.

Created by Adam Gavigan, known online as MY5TCrimson, the game launched in August 2012 and has since become a cornerstone of retro horror fan projects. It runs directly in your browser with no installation needed.

A Different Kind of Sonic Story

Instead of Sonic, players take control of Tails, Knuckles, and Dr. Eggman across three separate levels. Each character gets a corrupted version of a recognizable Sonic zone — and each one falls apart in its own way. The familiar settings are the bait. The decay is the point.

Early scenes feel hollow. Empty stages, missing enemies, a quiet that doesn’t belong in a Sonic game. Then come the dead animals scattered across the ground, glitch effects bleeding into the screen, and the warped music that signals Sonic.EXE is close.

The Three Character Levels

Tails begins in a stripped-down Green Hill Zone. The level feels off from the start, and brief flashes of Sonic.EXE confirm something is wrong. It ends with Tails being dragged into a burning Angel Island Zone, where the chase becomes literal.

Knuckles wakes up in a red-skied version of Scrap Brain Zone. The deeper he goes, the more hostile the environment gets. His ending is short and brutal — Sonic.EXE teleports around him until he collapses.

Eggman’s stage runs slower. Endless staircases. Repeating backgrounds. The whole thing loops in a way that feels less like a level and more like a trap. It closes with a direct confrontation and the line “I AM GOD.”

After all three are finished, a burning “GAME OVER” screen appears alongside a Japanese poem. Without doing extra work, that’s where it stops.

Hidden Paths and Secret Endings

The real depth comes from breaking Sonic tradition. Running left in specific levels — the opposite of every Sonic instinct — opens hidden routes. These secret stages are short, ugly, and packed with glitch effects, broken music, and direct messages from Sonic.EXE.

Each hidden area holds a black Ring. Collect all three and the Japanese poem gets translated at the end. Find every Ring across the game and a final sequence unlocks: players control Sonic himself, trapped in a static-filled void surrounded by flashing faces and more cryptic text. Eventually, the game locks up entirely.

Why It Still Matters

Sonic.EXE doesn’t rely on jump scares or gore to do the heavy lifting. The horror comes from corruption — taking something nostalgic and making it feel wrong. The pixel art looks intentionally cheap, but that’s part of the effect. It feels like a haunted ROM rather than a polished horror game.

For a free browser title made by one developer, it pulls more weight than it should. The lore alone has spawned years of fan content, spin-offs, and theories.
