Fireboy and Watergirl 1: Forest Temple | Co-Op Puzzle Platformer

Fireboy and Watergirl 1: Forest Temple is a cooperative puzzle platformer where players control two elemental characters to escape a trap-filled maze. The title challenges you to use specific fire and water abilities to solve environmental puzzles across 32 distinct stages.

The Dual-Character Dynamic

The setup is straightforward but demands constant attention. Two characters are on the screen at all times. Controlling both elements at the same time as a solo player turns the game into a brain-bending coordination test—your left and right hands essentially have to act independently to keep both characters moving safely.

But playing with a friend sitting next to you changes the experience entirely. Communication becomes mandatory. You have to sync your movements to hit switches and keep doors open without leaving your partner stuck behind a stone wall. Relying on one character’s strengths while ignoring the other simply won’t work. The design forces equal participation to reach the exit doors. Watergirl might have to cross a pool to drop a block, providing Fireboy with a safe surface to jump across. It requires thinking a few steps ahead.

Surviving the Temple Hazards

The Forest Temple operates as an obstacle course built around strict elemental rules. Fireboy walks through red-hot lava without taking any damage. Watergirl wades through blue liquid pools with zero issues. Cross those elements, however, and the character dies instantly. This forces a complete level restart.

And then there is the green ooze. It acts as an equalizer, destroying both characters on contact. Avoiding these toxic pits while trying to gather color-coded gems scattered around the map adds a strict layer of precision to the platforming. You are constantly watching where you land.

To progress, players have to physically alter the map geometry. Buttons must be held down under a character’s weight to keep moving platforms active. Heavy levers permanently shift walls or lower bridges. The difficulty ramps up noticeably after the first few tutorial stages, turning basic jumping exercises into tight tactical puzzles.

Game Controls

The keybinds are mapped to opposite sides of the keyboard, making it easy to share a screen or play completely solo.

  • Watergirl: Use the W, A, and D keys to move left, right, and jump.
  • Fireboy: Use the Left, Right, and Up arrow keys to move and jump.

As always, remember to have fun!
