Chip and Dale 2 (NES)

Released in December 1993 in Japan and shortly thereafter in the United States, “Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers 2” continues the adventures of the beloved Disney characters, Chip and Dale, in this platform game developed as a sequel to the popular 1990 video game. Based on the animated TV series, this game captures the charm and excitement of the chipmunk duo’s crime-fighting escapades.

Dynamic Gameplay and Cooperative Fun: “Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers 2” enhances the classic platform game formula with both single-player and two-player cooperative modes. Players navigate through a series of side-scrolling stages where they can walk, jump, duck, and pick up various objects—ranging from acorns to barrels—to throw at enemies and bosses. Each character is capable of withstanding three direct hits before losing a life, but additional hits can be accumulated throughout the game.

A significant change from its predecessor is the elimination of the map screen; instead, the game opts for a linear progression of stages. An interesting twist occurs at the amusement park stage, where players can tackle the first three areas in any order before proceeding to the climactic final stage. Another novel feature introduced in this sequel is the ability for players to pick up and throw each other at enemies, adding a humorous and strategic element to the co-op gameplay.

Engaging Plot Driven by Classic Characters: The game begins with the Rescue Rangers—Chip, Dale, Gadget, Monterey Jack, and Zipper—hearing news of a bomb threat at a local restaurant. This event sets them on a high-stakes adventure to thwart Fat Cat, the notorious antagonist who has escaped from prison and plans to steal the mystical Urn of the Pharaoh. The storyline weaves through various dramatic settings, from a cargo ship at the docks to a suspenseful chase through a haunted warehouse.

The narrative peaks at an amusement park, where the Rangers confront Fat Cat in a final showdown. After battling their way through inventive and challenging stages within the park—each themed differently as Clock Tower, Western World, and Future World—the Rangers face off against Fat Cat in a dramatic finale. Although Fat Cat eludes capture once again, Chip and Dale vow to continue their pursuit, setting the stage for future adventures.
