Friday the 13th Revisited for GBC: The Ultimate Retro Survival Horror Experience
Friday the 13th Revisited for GBC is a retro survival horror platformer that drops players back into Camp Crystal Lake to outlast the infamous Jason Voorhees. This portable demake rebuilds the terrifying 1988 NES classic entirely from scratch for the Game Boy Color hardware.
Indie developer ZeichiGames put together this fan project to bring a fresh perspective to an old-school nightmare. It leans heavily into nostalgia while fixing a lot of the clunky mechanics from the original era. The controls feel much tighter and more responsive. An update pushed out in late March 2026 also ironed out a few lingering bugs. That patch fixed a glitch messing with Jason’s health bar and stopped the time of day from randomly changing while players sail across the lake.
Surviving the Night at Camp Crystal Lake
Players take control of a camp counselor facing a brutal night. The main goal is to search the grounds, scrape together supplies, and survive until sunrise. Jason stalks the map relentlessly. You can’t just hide, though.
Here’s where the gameplay gets interesting. The game introduces a connected trading system that completely changes how you handle inventory. Players collect items and swap them with the other counselors to unlock much better weapons. Keeping those other characters alive is suddenly critical. If Jason manages to catch one of your friends, that specific link in your trading chain snaps forever. You permanently lose access to the heavy-hitting gear they would have provided down the line. It adds a ton of weight to every decision you make in the woods.
Fighting Back Against Jason
And you aren’t completely defenseless against the slasher. Jason actually has a visible health bar during encounters now. When you drain it to zero, he goes down for the count. But don’t let your guard down. He has a nasty habit of coming back later, and he hits even harder the next time around.
To help balance the scales, you can track down a counselor named Crissy. She hands out healing potions that act as an automatic failsafe. If your health suddenly hits zero during a fight, one of these potions instantly kicks in to keep you standing. Having one in your back pocket is a massive lifesaver when you inevitably get cornered.
