Sonic Megamix Mania

Sonic Megamix Mania

Sonic Megamix Mania is a 2D platformer built as a fan-made modification for Sonic Mania Plus. Developed by Team Megamix Mania, the project rebuilds the classic hack from the ground up while adding six playable characters, six zones, and multiple game modes.

The original Megamix hack had a devoted following before development stopped. This mod picks up where it left off. Version 1.0 arrived in January 2026 after roughly eight years of work, with a v1.1 update following shortly after to fix crashes and rebalance levels. Worth noting: this team is not the original Megamix crew—it’s a tribute built by players who grew up with the hack.

The Story

The mod sets its plot months after Eggman vanished following the Space Colony ARK incident. Strange discoveries on the Chiral Peninsula point to his return, this time drawing power from Chaos Rings and positive ring energy. Sonic and his allies each have their own stake in what unfolds.

Playable Characters

Six characters are available, and they change the game more than you’d expect. Certain level sections are redesigned depending on who you pick—playing Misty Maze as Mighty versus Tails feels like two different stages.

  • Sonic
  • Tails
  • Knuckles
  • Shadow (replaces Ray)
  • Mighty
  • Amy (included as a companion add-on that replaces Mighty when enabled)

Each character carries their own moveset, HUD, title cards, and even personal music tracks for Speed Shoes, Invincibility, 1-ups, Game Over, and Act Clear. Small touch. Big personality.

All Zones

Every zone from the original Megamix returns, fully reimagined:

  • Sunny Shores
  • Dark Fortress
  • City Outskirts
  • Misty Maze
  • Starry Night
  • Metallic Base

In Megamix Mode, each zone runs two acts that look nothing alike—Sunny Shores opens on a tropical beach, then shifts into a dense forest for Act 2. Classic Mode stages use three acts per zone with a retro visual style. Misty Maze Act 1 stands out with an exclusive route for every single character, which makes replaying it as the whole cast genuinely worthwhile.

Game Modes

  • Megamix Mode is the headline act. It takes concepts from the original ROM hack and reworks them with the team’s own vision—new art, music, level design, and gimmicks. A first playthrough runs about 90 minutes, and the branching paths mean you’ll miss plenty on your first run.
  • Classic Mode recreates content from versions 4.0b and 5.0a of the original hack with sharper art and touched-up level design. Save files and special stages are restricted for now, so this mode runs through a level select.
  • Time Attack lets players pick any act from both modes and chase personal records. Classic Mode Act 3s aren’t available in this mode yet.
  • Challenges offers 14 remixed Megamix Mode acts with reversed layouts, faster hazards, tougher enemies, and time limits. One bonus challenge even applies a green screen filter inspired by the Yakuza series. Best saved until after finishing Megamix Mode—it spoils the zones otherwise.
  • Jukebox holds the full original soundtrack from both modes, accessible straight from the main menu. The music deserves it.
