Psycho Fox (SMS)

“Psycho Fox” is a 1989 platform game for the Sega Master System, developed by Vic Tokai. The game’s setting revolves around a mythical group of fox priests who worship the Inari Daimyojin, or Fox Deity. The story unfolds as Madfox Daimyōjin, an evil fox, infiltrates the shrine, climbs to a high rank, and corrupts the land by taking over and creating hostile creatures.

Players control Psycho Fox, a courageous young fox chosen by his community to defeat Madfox Daimyōjin and restore peace to their world. The game features side-scrolling gameplay where the objective is to navigate from the left to the right side of the level, overcoming various enemies along the way.

One of the unique gameplay features of “Psycho Fox” is the Shinto stick, which allows Psycho Fox to transform into one of three different animals: a hippopotamus, a monkey, or a tiger. Each animal has special abilities that are essential for progressing through the game. The hippopotamus has the strength to punch through special destructible blocks, the monkey excels in jumping to reach higher platforms, and the tiger can run swiftly, ideal for speeding through levels.

Additionally, Psycho Fox is aided by Birdfly, a companion who can be used as both armor and a weapon. Birdfly acts as a protective shield; if Psycho Fox is hit while carrying Birdfly, Birdfly will disappear instead of the player losing a life. Birdfly can also be thrown like a boomerang to attack distant enemies.

“Psycho Fox” is known for its engaging and inventive gameplay, quirky characters, and the strategic use of transformations to solve puzzles and combat challenges, making it a memorable title from the Sega Master System era.
