Dragon Ball Z: Team Training
Dragon Ball Z: Team Training is a fan-made turn-based RPG that replaces traditional monster-catching mechanics with intense martial arts battles. Players build and train a custom roster drawn from the iconic anime universe, exploring a sprawling map to challenge rival trainers and hunt down the legendary Dragon Balls.
Instead of catching wild animals, you capture and recruit fighters. Z-Max, the developer who built this ambitious modification of FireRed, managed to finish a crossover project many others had attempted and ultimately abandoned. The sheer volume of playable characters is where the game actually shines. A total of 165 different warriors are available to find and add to your squad.
You get the expected heavy hitters like Goku, Gohan, and Vegeta—complete with their powerful Super Saiyan God transformations. But the roster digs deep into the franchise’s history too. Stumbling across obscure characters like Taopaipai, Drum, or Bear Thief out in the tall grass is a strange but highly entertaining twist on the usual random encounter formula.
Merging Two Classic Franchises
Mechanically, the experience mirrors its Game Boy Advance roots. You travel between towns, battle opponents, and level up your team to unlock new combat moves. Building a balanced squad is just as important here as it is in any traditional RPG.
Then there is the exploration side. Talking to random NPCs scattered across the map is usually optional filler in these types of games. Here, they actually hand out solid intel on where to track down the rarest fighters. You can also hunt for all seven Dragon Balls while traveling between towns. Collect them, and you get to summon Shenron to grant a wish. It gives you an active secondary goal beyond just grinding levels to beat the toughest bosses.
