Mallow
Mallow is a fast-paced top-down action roguelike made by Goose Shroom that demands quick reflexes and strategic thinking from its players. Drawing clear inspiration from genre heavyweights like Nuclear Throne, the experience is defined by chaotic combat and a high degree of difficulty.
The game distinguishes itself with a unique risk-and-reward system regarding progression. Rather than relying entirely on random chance, you are given control over how the challenge escalates. The core mechanic forces a trade-off: every time you select an upgrade to improve your abilities, you must also choose a specific enemy type to add to the run. This requires players to carefully weigh the benefits of new powers against the dangerous foes they introduce to the arena.
Developed by a solo student creator who handled every aspect of the production except for the music, the project is admittedly rough around the edges but intentionally punishing. It serves as a demo of the concept, offering a rigorous test of skill for fans of the genre. If you find the challenging gameplay loop engaging, you can support the full release by wishlisting it on Steam
