Umbra is a combat-based platformer that blends story-driven adventure with fast-paced swordplay. Created with PICO‑8 and Aseprite by indie developer Keys, the game invites players into the mystical world of Umbra, where shadows and light wage a silent war. The demo version, released in December 2025, is already gaining attention for its pixel-art design, smooth combat, and mysterious atmosphere.
Players take on the role of Rem, a warrior recovering from a brutal battle that cost her an arm. She’s rescued by two strangers, healed enough to keep fighting, and sent back into a world threatened by the forces of light. Her mission is simple but heavy — stop these invaders from destroying her home, armed with nothing but determination and the sword of a fallen hero.
The story unfolds through exploration and combat, offering short bursts of gameplay that feel rewarding and brisk. Players can jump, attack, and heal using bloodstones, which add strategy to every encounter. Each move matters, especially when enemies demand precise timing and awareness. Although the current demo includes only a tutorial and two main levels, there are secret areas waiting to be uncovered — a small hint of what’s yet to come, pending the promised boss fight in future updates.
What stands out about Umbra is its tone. Rather than just an action challenge, the game creates a moody atmosphere through its pixel-art environments and quiet storytelling. The world feels alive, yet tense — a fitting balance between beauty and danger.
With its half-hour runtime, Umbra is perfect for anyone wanting a short yet memorable journey through a world of shadow and light. It’s a promising start from an indie creator exploring how storytelling can live inside classic platforming action — sharp combat, pixel art, and all.
