Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage – A Classic Superhero Beat ’em Up

Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage is a thrilling side-scrolling beat ’em up game developed by Software Creations and published by Acclaim Entertainment and its subsidiary LJN in 1994. Available on both the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the Mega Drive/Genesis, this game draws heavily from the popular comic book storyline of the same name, immersing players in the dark and intense world of Marvel’s most beloved characters.

Plot

The game begins with Eddie Brock, also known as Venom, being released from prison and vowing to avoid using the Venom symbiote for evil. However, chaos ensues as the symbiote bonds with Brock’s former cellmate, Cletus Kasady, transforming him into the maniacal Carnage. As Carnage unleashes a reign of terror across New York City, Spider-Man and Venom set aside their differences to stop him.

Throughout the game, Carnage amasses a formidable team including Shriek, the mutated Hobgoblin now known as Demogoblin, the four-armed Doppelgänger, and the decaying clone Carrion. This vicious group wreaks havoc, pushing Spider-Man and Venom to their limits. The heroes must form a “resistance” with other Marvel characters to counter this threat, leading to a climactic battle in the sewers of New York.

Gameplay

As either Spider-Man or Venom, players navigate through various levels battling scores of enemies and overcoming obstacles to stop Carnage and his gang. The gameplay is reminiscent of classic beat ’em ups like Double Dragon and Final Fight, with each level presenting new challenges and enemies.

Players can also summon additional Marvel heroes for assistance by collecting special items scattered throughout the levels. These items allow heroes such as Captain America, Black Cat, and others to lend their powers temporarily. The effectiveness of each summoned hero varies, often depending on their historical alliances with Spider-Man or Venom, adding a strategic layer to the game.

The two versions of the game for SNES and Genesis are nearly identical, ensuring a consistent experience across platforms. With its engaging storyline, dynamic combat, and the inclusion of multiple fan-favorite characters, Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage stands out as a memorable and action-packed entry in the world of superhero video games.
