Feed Me: The Venus Fly Trap Platformer Game You Can Play in Your Browser

Feed Me is a platform game by Nitrome where you play as a hungry venus fly trap trying to escape a greenhouse. You bite onto walls, floors, and ceilings to drag yourself through each level, munching bugs along the way.

Sounds weird? It is. That’s kind of the point.

What Feed Me Is About

Most platformers give you a hero who runs and jumps. Feed Me gives you a plant in a pot. You can’t walk. You can’t jump. All you can do is bite.

Here’s how it works. You click somewhere near your plant, and it stretches its head out and clamps down on whatever surface is there. Then it pulls the rest of itself — pot and all — toward that spot. Do this over and over and you’re basically dragging yourself across the greenhouse one bite at a time.

It feels like doing pull-ups with your teeth. And once it clicks, it’s hard to put down.

How the Levels Work

Each level has one goal: reach the exit door. Between you and that door are thorns, poisonous insects, and awkward gaps that punish sloppy biting. Touch the wrong thing and you’re starting over.

There’s a bonus hunt too. Every level hides three watering cans, and grabbing them earns extra points. You can rush straight for the exit if you want. But going after all three cans is where the real challenge lives, since they’re usually tucked in spots that take some tricky maneuvering.

Flies buzz around the levels as snacks. You’re a carnivorous plant, after all. Eating comes with the job.

Why Players Still Talk About This Game

Nitrome released Feed Me back on July 31st, 2006 — it was only their fifth game ever. The idea came from the studio wondering what a game would look like with a venus fly trap as the main character. Fun fact: the name is a nod to the musical Little Shop of Horrors, where a man-eating plant famously demands “Feed me!”

The pixel art still holds up. Bright colors, bouncy animations, a plant with more personality than half the mascots in bigger games. The graphics do more than you’d expect from a browser game this old.

The game was popular enough that Nitrome started building a mobile sequel called Super Feed Me. Development ended up on hold, which tells you the original is still the one to play.

Tips for New Players

Bite close, not far. Long stretches look cool but leave you hanging over hazards with no backup plan. Short, controlled bites keep your pot safe.

Think before you swing. Your pot follows your head, and it has weight. If you yank yourself over a thorn patch, momentum can carry the pot right into it. Slow down near anything sharp.

And don’t skip the watering cans on your first run. Some of them teach you movement tricks you’ll need later anyway.
