Angry Birds Epic

Angry Birds Epic: Turn-Based RPG on Piggy Island

Swords instead of slingshots. Angry Birds Epic is a turn-based RPG where you lead three birds into battle against the pigs who stole your eggs.

King Pig sends Prince Porky and Wizpig to raid the nest, and the flock goes after them across Piggy Island. You march along a map dotted with stages, and each stage drops you into a fight against a lineup of pigs. Beaches, frozen mountains, caves, pirate coasts. The pigs get nastier the further you go.

How Do You Play Angry Birds Epic?

You drag a bird onto a pig to attack it. Drag that same bird onto a teammate instead and you use its support skill on them, or tap the bird to use it on itself. Then the pigs take their turn and hit back.

Every hit landed or taken fills the Rage Chili meter at the bottom of the screen. Once it’s full, drag the chili onto any bird for a much stronger attack. Red’s Heroic Strike alone can end a fight that looked lost. Hold your finger or cursor on any character, bird or pig, to read its health, abilities, and active effects before you commit to a move. Do that on bosses. Half the losses in this game come from attacking something that counters.

The Five Birds

You unlock five birds over the campaign but only bring three into any battle. Each one wears a helmet, and the helmet is the class. Swap the helmet and you change what that bird does.

  • Red: your tank. As a Knight he builds shields and taunts the whole pig lineup into hitting him instead of your healer.
  • Chuck: the damage dealer. The Mage class hits every enemy at once with Storm, and Rainbird trades that for healing and poison over time.
  • Matilda: the healer. Cleric keeps everyone standing, Druid adds Thorny Vine for chip damage, and Princess buffs the team with Royal Command.
  • Bomb: half attacker, half support. Pirate shields an ally while doing damage, Cannoneer splits its hit into three smaller ones.
  • The Blues: Jay, Jake, and Jim fight as one unit. Tricksters wipe harmful effects off your birds, which is exactly what you need in the castle fights.

New classes get bought from Class Trainers you reach at set points in the campaign. Matilda’s Druid unlocks after Limestone Lagoon, Chuck’s Rainbird after Pirate Coast, Bomb’s Cannoneer after Northern Slingshot Woods. Most cost Snoutlings, the coins you get from beating pigs. A few cost the rarer Lucky Coins.

Crafting and the Arena

Battles drop resources, and you spend them at your camp forging weapons, armor, and potions. Better gear means bigger numbers on every ability, since damage scales off your attack power. Potions get dragged onto a bird mid fight, one per bird per turn.

There’s also a player versus player arena run by Terence. You bring three birds and three banners, and losing all three banners locks you out until the next day. Leagues run from Wood at the bottom up to Diamond.

Chimera Entertainment built it for Rovio and released it worldwide on June 12, 2014. It was a phone game first, so the drag controls feel right on a touch screen, and it plays the same with a mouse. Angry Birds Epic in your browser skips the app store entirely, which matters because the game was pulled from stores years ago.
