Comix Zone (Sega)
Comix Zone is a thrilling beat ’em up video game that pulls you right into the pages of a comic book! Released in 1995 by Sega for the Genesis, this game is set in a vibrant and dynamic comic book world, complete with dialogue bubbles and brightly colored panels that make you feel like you’re part of a superhero story. It’s so unique that Sega even got a patent for creating a game that’s like living inside a comic!
Game Origin
The idea for Comix Zone came from a 1992 demo called “Joe Pencil Trapped In The Comix Zone.” The game was designed to explore how to mix comic book art and gameplay into one cool experience.
Story Mode
The story stars Sketch Turner, a struggling artist and rock musician in New York City. He’s working on his comic book, Comix Zone, which tells a tale of Earth defending against alien invaders. One stormy night, lightning strikes his comic, and the villain of his story, a mutant named Mortus, comes to life! Mortus wants to escape the comic and rule the real world, but since he can’t do that directly, he traps Sketch inside the comic instead.
Inside the comic, Sketch teams up with General Alissa Cyan, who thinks he’s “the chosen one.” Despite Sketch’s doubts, he gets whisked off on an epic quest to save their world and stop Mortus. Along the way, they try to defuse a nuclear weapon that could wipe out humanity. Depending on how quick players are in the final battle, they can experience different endings. In one ending, Alissa and Sketch’s pet rat Roadkill join him in the real world, leading to a new, peaceful life. In another, if players are too slow, Alissa doesn’t make it, leaving Sketch heartbroken but determined to rewrite the story for a happier ending.
Gameplay
As Sketch, you’ll jump, punch, and kick your way through the panels of his comic book. Each level is like a page from a comic, and you must solve puzzles or beat up enemies to jump to the next panel. Sketch can tear off parts of the comic to create paper planes to throw at enemies, but be careful—this move uses up some of his health!
Sketch can carry three items in his inventory to help him along the way, like bombs, knives, and iced tea to heal himself. His pet rat, Roadkill, is also super helpful for finding hidden items and reaching places Sketch can’t.
Your adventure is packed with action, and managing Sketch’s health is key. If you run out of health or fall into a pit, it’s game over, and Mortus wins. But don’t worry, clearing chapters gives you extra lives to keep the adventure going!
Comix Zone is a game that’s as fun to play as it is to look at, making you feel like you’re both reading a comic and being its hero at the same time!
Just Have Fun!
