Garfield: Caught in the Act (Sega)
“Garfield: Caught in the Act” is a 1995 side-scrolling platform game developed and published by Sega for the Genesis and Game Gear, with a later version for Microsoft Windows. Based on Jim Davis’ popular comic strip character, Garfield, the game creatively ties into themes from the 1984 book “Garfield: His 9 Lives.”
The game begins with a humorous mishap: Odie startles Garfield while they’re watching TV, causing them to accidentally break the television. In a frantic attempt to fix it before their owner, Jon Arbuckle, notices, Garfield and Odie scramble to put the pieces back together. However, in their rush, they mistakenly create an electronic monster known as the Glitch. This villain transports Garfield inside the TV, setting the stage for the game’s main adventure.
In “Garfield: Caught in the Act,” players control Garfield as he navigates through various TV show-themed levels. These levels are linear but expansive, filled with obstacles, enemies, and hazards. Players will find Garfield running, jumping, climbing, swinging, and dodging through these stages. As the game progresses, the levels become more complex and maze-like, requiring exploration and multiple routes to reach the end where a boss battle awaits.
The game features two types of bonus rounds, including one that resembles a Whac-A-Mole game. After defeating each boss, players are treated to a “commercial break” where Garfield rockets through the Television Wasteland, giving players a chance to earn extra lives or continues.
Overall, “Garfield: Caught in the Act” combines classic platforming action with the humor and style of the Garfield comics, creating a fun and engaging experience as players help Garfield defeat the Glitch and escape from the perilous world of television.
