Solomon’s Key (NES)

“Solomon’s Key” is a captivating puzzle game developed by Tecmo in 1986 that combines elements of strategy and action. Players step into the shoes of Dana, the wizard of Lyrac, who is tasked with a crucial mission: to unlock Solomon’s scroll of secrets and restore peace across the constellations.

Gameplay Overview:

In “Solomon’s Key,” the player controls Dana through a series of challenging puzzle-platform levels where the primary objective is to obtain a key and then reach the exit. Dana’s magical abilities allow him to create and destroy platforms, a mechanic that is integral to solving the puzzles presented in each room. Additionally, Dana can use his magic to fend off or trap enemies, adding a layer of action to the strategic gameplay.

Levels and Structure:

The game features a total of 64 levels, with a unique structure that aligns with the Zodiac constellations:

  • Main Levels: There are 48 main levels organized into groups of four, corresponding to each of the 12 Zodiac signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.
  • Secret and Bonus Rooms: Each constellation group includes a secret bonus room, which can only be accessed by finding a seal in the last room of that group. These rooms offer additional challenges and rewards, enhancing the game’s replay value.
  • Special Levels: Beyond the constellation-themed levels, there are three special levels known as the Page of Time, Page of Space, and the Princess Room. These are accessible only if the player collects the hidden Seals of Solomon throughout the game.
  • Final Level: The adventure culminates in “Solomon’s Room,” the final level where the ultimate challenges await.
