Solomon’s Key 2
Solomon’s Key 2, known in North America as “Fire ‘n Ice,” is a puzzle game developed by Tecmo for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Released in Japan in January 1992 and subsequently in North America and Europe in March 1993, this game serves as a prequel to the original “Solomon’s Key.” The narrative is creatively presented as a tale recounted by an elderly woman to her grandchildren, set on the icy Coolmint Island, home to the winter fairies.
The story unfolds as the peace of Coolmint Island is threatened by the evil wizard Druidle, who sends flame monsters to melt the island’s ice. In response, the fairy queen calls upon Dana, an apprentice wizard, empowering him with ice magic to combat this fiery menace.
Gameplay in “Solomon’s Key 2” involves controlling Dana through various stages with the objective to extinguish all the fires on each level. Players can eliminate the fires by either kicking an ice block into them or dropping one onto them from above. Dana’s abilities include walking horizontally, climbing over single-block obstacles, pushing ice blocks which slide until obstructed, and most crucially, using his ice magic. His magic allows him to create and destroy ice blocks on the grid directly adjacent to him or beneath him, adhering to the game’s grid-based mechanics. This ability is pivotal for solving puzzles as it allows blocks to attach to nearby walls, pipes, jars, or other blocks, creating pathways or barriers as needed to navigate through levels and extinguish flames.
