Lee Lee Quest 2

Lee Lee’s Quest Series: Satirical Platforming at Its Best

Lee Lee’s Quest is a comedy platformer series that uses traditional jumping mechanics to constantly make fun of video game cliches. Players take control of an arrogant, heavily opinionated hero on a completely absurd rescue mission while enduring non-stop sarcastic commentary.

On the surface, developer Marcus Richert’s project looks like a completely standard indie game. You run across floating platforms and hit bounce pads. Geometric enemies wander around waiting to be squashed. But turn the sound on. Voice actor Joshua Tomar turns the main character into an endless stream of complaints, math jokes, and fourth-wall breaks. The enemies are just as bad. These roaming polyhedrons openly hate Lee-Lee and his ego. Bouncing on their heads feels a bit more personal when they actively insult you right back.

The storyline sets the bizarre tone immediately. Our hero believes he is destined to save his true love, Lu-Lu, from an evil boss. The catch is that Lu-Lu is not a girl. They aren’t even friends. Lee-Lee is just incredibly delusional. In the sequel, the villain from the first game actually wins over this supposed love interest. You end up chasing them down again simply because that is what a protagonist is supposed to do.

The first game burns through most of the basic jokes about the genre. So Lee-Lee’s Quest 2 gets specific. The dialogue takes direct shots at annoying tropes like sudden Atari-style retro levels or camera zooms that expose ugly backgrounds. It borders on actual satire.

Here’s the weird part. By trying to mock difficult games, the sequel accidentally becomes a highly competent action game. The graphics get a nice update, and the movement mechanics are much sharper. You have to use wall-grips to navigate some genuinely tricky sections. The game deliberately mocks pointless collectibles, yet it still makes you gather shovels and fruit anyway. Sometimes grabbing a pineapple rewards you with points. Other times it drops your character into a gimp suit. A few late-game stages use cheap, unfair tricks to kill you, just for a laugh. They don’t drag on too long before letting you move forward.
