Golden Axe III, a continuation of the beloved Sega side-scrolling beat ’em up series, was released for the Sega Mega Drive in Japan on June 25, 1993. This installment adds new layers to the classic hack and slash adventure with fresh characters, expanded moves, and dynamic paths.

Plot Overview

The evil Prince of Darkness, Damud Hellstrike, has seized the legendary Golden Axe, casting a dark curse over all the warriors of the land. Miraculously, one hero shakes off this curse and is charged with the daunting task of rescuing their fellow warriors, defeating Hellstrike, and retrieving the Golden Axe to restore peace.

• Kain Grinder: A balanced warrior with a long-reaching sword and ice/water magic.
• Sahra Burn: Quick and agile, Sahra uses fire magic and can double jump and wall jump, making her excellent for evasive maneuvers.
• Proud Cragger: A giant with earth-shaking strength and earth magic, slow but powerful, with a special tornado attack.
• Chronos “Evil” Lait: A humanoid panther with devastating wind magic and a lunging super move that crosses the screen.
• Gilius Thunderhead: The wise old dwarf acts as a guide in this game, having retired from his warrior life.
• Eve: A mysterious humanoid Griffin and initially an opponent, revealed to be the cursed king in the game’s climax.
