Telefang: Power and Speed Edition

Keitai Denjū Telefang, also known as “Telefang 1,” is a captivating role-playing game that was released exclusively in Japan on November 3, 2000, for the Game Boy Color. Developed by Natsume and published by Smilesoft, the game introduced an innovative gameplay mechanic centered around collecting and utilizing the phone numbers of creatures known as Denjū. The game is available in two distinct versions: Power Version and Speed Version, each offering unique starting creatures and variations in the storyline.

Gameplay and Mechanics

“Telefang 1” operates from a top-down perspective, allowing players to navigate a richly detailed world known as the Denjuu World. Players step into the shoes of Shigeki, a young T-Fanger who accidentally finds himself in the Denjuu World. As a T-Fanger, Shigeki’s goal is to befriend Denjuu by obtaining their telephone numbers, which are crucial for calling them into battles.

The key gameplay feature involves using a device called a D-Shot, a special type of mobile phone that enables communication and summoning of Denjuu. Battles are turn-based, with each Denjuu possessing unique abilities that can be leveraged during fights. The strategic element of the game is enhanced by the need to manage these abilities and decide when to call upon different Denjuu.

Story and Character Development

Upon his arrival in the Denjuu World, Shigeki quickly allies with his first Denjuu companion—Crypto in the Power Version or Fungus in the Speed Version. Driven by a sense of adventure and the thrill of making new friends, Shigeki becomes more involved in the world’s affairs, addressing various problems and challenges faced by its inhabitants. His journey is not only about battling but also about building relationships and understanding the complexities of the Denjuu World.

Power and Speed version differences

The two versions, Power and Speed, have some differences:

  • The starter Denjuu that the player is given at the beginning of the game is different, with Crypto for the Power version Fungus for the Speed version.
  • There are some Denjuu that can only be found in one version.
  • There are some colour differences between the two, such as the colour of the D-Shot menu.
  • In Paparuna Lake, the order of houses one is required to enter to solve the puzzle is different in Power version than that in Speed version.
  • The directions to navigate Ixos Forest are slightly different in each version.

Relation with Pokemon:

Despite initial infamy in the west for the unrepresentative bootleg releases titled Pokémon Diamond and Jade, the game has gained a cult following owing to inspired creature designs by Saiko Takaki, a killer soundtrack by Kinuyo Yamashita, its humorous monster-of-the-week story, and solid, if light, gameplay. No fan of Pokémon or Game Boy games should miss it!

Just Have Fun!
