Riviera: The Promised Land

Riviera: The Promised Land is an engaging role-playing video game that combines elements of strategy and dating simulators, creating a unique gameplay experience. Originally developed by Sting Entertainment for the WonderSwan Color in 2002, it was later ported to the Game Boy Advance and released in North America by Atlus USA in 2005. This game is the first episode in the Dept. Heaven series.

Plot and Characters

The game follows the story of Ein, a Grim Angel tasked with combating demons and rival Grim Angels to seal away four malevolent entities known as the Accursed. Ein is not alone in his quest; he is accompanied by four heroines—Fia, Lina, Serene, and Cierra—as well as his cat-like familiar, Rose. The interactions between Ein and his companions are crucial, as the game incorporates dating sim elements that influence the storyline and multiple potential endings based on the player’s choices.

Gameplay Mechanics

Riviera: The Promised Land is primarily a turn-based RPG but stands out due to its incorporation of strategic decisions and relationship-building elements:

  • Exploration and Missions: The game is structured around seven main chapters, each beginning in the mystical town of Elendia. From there, Ein embarks on a mission that guides him through various stages, culminating in a boss battle. The ninth and final stage of each chapter is secret, requiring specific actions to unlock.
  • Interaction and Decision Making: As players progress, they encounter numerous scenarios where Ein must interact with his companions. Choices made during these interactions affect the trust and mood of the heroines, ultimately influencing the game’s ending. This system adds a layer of depth and personalization, as players navigate through complex relationships while advancing the plot.
  • Combat and Strategy: Battles are turn-based, with players needing to strategically manage their resources and characters’ abilities. The game also features a unique system of “trigger points” earned through performance in chapters, which are crucial for unlocking special abilities and progressing through subsequent chapters.
  • Performance and Rewards: At the end of each chapter, players are evaluated based on their performance, receiving trigger points accordingly. These points are vital for enhancing abilities and preparing for the challenges of the next chapter.
