Battletoads (NES)
Battletoads the inaugural game of the popular series developed by Rare and published by Tradewest, made its debut on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991. The game is renowned for blending the classic side-scrolling beat-em-up action, akin to “Double Dragon,” with unique arcade-style vehicle stages, creating a dynamic gameplay experience.
In “Battletoads,” players control the ‘Toads—Rash, Zitz, and Pimple—as they fight through various levels using unique combat techniques. The gameplay involves weakening enemies with standard punches and then delivering a comical, exaggerated “Smash Hit” finisher, like using oversized boots to kick foes off the screen. The ‘Toads can also use their tongues to catch flies for health replenishment and find items that grant extra lives or access to secretive level warps.
The story sets off after the Dark Queen’s defeat at the battle of Canis Major, following which she retreats to the dark corners of the universe. Meanwhile, the Battletoads, led by Professor T. Bird and including Princess Angelica, journey towards her home planet. The plot thickens when Pimple and Princess Angelica are ambushed by the Dark Queen while leisurely cruising in space, leading to their capture. This event triggers a daring rescue mission, setting the stage for the action-packed adventures of the Battletoads as they attempt to thwart the Dark Queen’s evil plans and save their friends.
