Chiptone

Chiptone is a browser-based sound effect generator designed for creating retro-style audio quickly and easily. Whether you’re working on a game, video, or just experimenting, this free tool lets players design custom sounds with simple controls.

Originally built in Flash, Chiptone has since moved to HTML5, making it accessible directly in your browser. There are also downloadable versions for Windows and Mac if you prefer working offline. No installation is needed—just load it up and start tweaking sounds instantly.

The interface is straightforward. On the left, preset buttons generate basic effects with one click, making it easy to find a starting point. From there, you can adjust key parameters like pitch, waveform, and modulation through simple dials and sliders. Each setting—frequency, attack, decay, sustain—gives you precise control over how the final sound behaves.

Chiptone was developed by Tom Vian (SFBGames), with design work by Adam Vian. It takes inspiration from previous tools like bfxr, as3sfxr, and sfxr, refining the process of retro sound creation. The software was built using Haxe and OpenFL, ensuring smooth performance.

If you’re looking for a quick way to make game sounds or just enjoy audio experimentation, give Chiptone a try—no downloads or setup needed. Head to the site, and start designing sounds in seconds.
