This social psychology experiment conducted by Yale University psychologist Stanley Milgram explored the extent of participants’ obedience to authority figures, even when their actions conflicted with their personal conscience. Real-life participants, consisting of 40 men aged 20 to 50 from various occupations and education levels, were instructed to administer fake electric shocks to a “learner” as part of an unrelated experiment. Shockingly, the experiment found that a significant proportion of participants were willing to fully obey instructions, even administering potentially fatal electric shocks of up to 450 volts.
