MAERE 2: Hypnagogia
MÆRE II: Surviving the Night in a Randomized Horror Room
MÆRE II is a psychological horror game where players must try to sleep through the night inside a highly active haunted room. Building on the foundation of its predecessor, this sequel introduces unpredictable events designed to make resting incredibly stressful.
The original title started as a straightforward Halloween project by the creator, focusing on the simple task of trying to catch some sleep while paranormal things happened around you. Feedback from that first release clearly shaped how this follow-up plays out. The developer cranked up the baseline creepiness to ensure that simply closing your eyes feels like a genuine risk.
Unpredictable Hauntings
This new entry strips away the safety of memorization. The ghostly events are now completely randomized. Every time players start a new session, the specific triggers and scares shuffle into a different order—meaning you can never truly anticipate what the room will throw at you next. It definitely keeps the tension running higher than you might expect for a relatively tight, contained premise.
Managing the Panic
Surviving until morning isn’t just a matter of ignoring the bumps in the night. MÆRE II introduces a strict fear level mechanic that acts as your main obstacle. Let your character’s anxiety climb too high, and the hostile entities hovering around the bed will attack. You have to carefully balance the requirement to sleep with the very real threat of being caught off guard. And that is often harder than it sounds.
How to play
- The object of the game is to fall asleep.
- HOLD J to close your eyes.
- RELEASE J to open them.
- Keep your EYES CLOSED and FEAR levels low to fall asleep.
- If you hear something in the dark it will raise your FEAR levels, as will seeing an entity.
- It is difficult to fall asleep if you are afraid. So make sure you keep your FEAR level low.
- You can reduce your FEAR level by looking around the area where ou heard the noise coming from, this will reassure you that the area is safe.
- Use A and D KEYS to look around.
- Ghosts thrive on attention. So if you do see something that should not be there. Don’t pay attention to it and eventually it will leave you alone.
- When asleep you may dream.
- Nothing can hurt you in your head.
- But you may still feel the sensation of pain.
